Things to Do in Christianshavn
A place we’ve heard many different things about which made us insecure but there’s no sense of insecurity, so you can go there without worry. Yes, there are many police officers patrolling the area, but we didn’t encounter any troublesome situations.
Christinia, where the autonomous hippie community lives, seems interesting at first but as we walked in the area, we did not find it so special. Yes, it is quite different from the other parts of the city but maybe it felt so messy. I guess I was expecting something similar to Urban Spree kind of ambiance in Berlin. For four decades, Christiania faced ongoing disputes between its residents and the Danish government. In 2011, an agreement was made to resolve the uncertainty surrounding its future, leading to the establishment of the Foundation Freetown Christiania in July 2012. It might be a bit difficult to realize at first that you’ve entered an autonomous area, but the “No Photography Allowed” signs and smells especially in and around the Pusher Street make it clearer. One of the reasons not to let visitor to take photogras was to prevent the illegal trade being photographed. However, as I looked into Google, it seems that the substance’s free trade is banned.
There were some murals in the area, but I did not find those very impressive. There are also parties and festivals time to time. You can find the event calender and art exhibitions calender on the Christinia’s webstie. Local residents offer tours for visitors in summer, not free though. If you are not comfortable wandering alone, you might prefer to utilize these tours and get more insight into the area. We have preferred to explore on our own.
What I liked about this area was walking alone the canal. This part is often referred to as the Amsterdam Canal due to its resemblance to Amsterdam. The boat houses, colorful houses with triangle roofs, chic restaurants makes it enjoyable to wander along the canal. I’d prefer Amsterdam canals though.
Church of Our Saviour is a baroque architecture church you can visit in Christianshavn as well. The external spiral winding staircase around the tower in golden colors is the most attractive feature of the church.
